Here you will find updates, snippets, and more! My day's are crazy, and my nights are wild. From family to writing, it all gets laid out here!
Today I'd like to discuss those moments in our lives that we can't get back... those wasted hours preparing something that is an utter failure. You all know what I'm talking about and have all had at least one in your lifetime, and too many to count if your like me. Well, today was no exception. I lived in California until the age of 12, and my parents had a friend that was from Poland. She was the sweetest woman, and her cooking was unbelievable. She always made Pierogies of different kinds, from the traditional sauerkraut and mushroom to the mashed potatoes and blueberry desert Pierogies. I loved them. Thanks to Pinterest, I was finally going to get to make them myself. I got up and got dressed early to take the kids to school so I could stop by the grocery store fore the items I ordered last night (I love the new order online, pick up feature stores are offering now. I hate grocery shopping.) needed in my 'big cooking project' that I just HAD to try. I've been wanting to make Polish Pierogies for years, and found a recipe online that resembled what I remember from my child hood. So, back to my story. I dropped the kids off as normal and punched King Soopers into my GPS and headed on my way. (Yes. I am that directionally challenged that I have to use the GPS everywhere I go. I'm like the van on Disney's Cars... Never go anywhere without the GPS.) In the wrong direction, to the wrong store. I live in a city. There are a lot of cars and a lot of lanes and it's a royal pain in the arse to turn around. I was about four miles in the wrong direction. After about twenty minutes of maneuvering and turning in parking lots and flipping U- turns, I FINALLY got going the right way, to the correct store. I felt pretty special at that moment. Anyway, I called and the little guy brought out my groceries, informing me that they were out of rolling pins. I don't have one anymore. I needed one before I could cook, and I knew it was going to be an all day project, so I phone a friend and swing by to borrow hers. Disaster diverted. That has to be a good omen, right? I got home and began cooking... mixing and kneading the dough exactly as the instructions indicated and followed the recipe exactly. By the time I finished cooking one of the fillings and two batches of dough, it was about 12:30. I began the tedious task of forming the Pierogiess, which, let me tell you isn't as easy as one would think. Anyway, after throwing four away, I had a full cookie sheet and set them aside, as per the recipe. I cooked the second filling and filled those, and began boiling the water. The moment when everything went to shit happened next. At about 1:30 I went to remove the Pierogies to put in the boiling water and they were stuck. Yes. I oiled the pan AS INSTRUCTED! As it stuck, it ripped a hole in the middle of my beautiful deformed dumpling and spilled its guts out. The next one, the same thing. And the third.... I managed to salvage about 15 our of over 40 of the little bastards. I was pissed. Thankfully I did my homework and had ordered Won Ton wrappers for an emergency fix... which came in handy. At 3:00, I had finally finished the damn things and went to get the kids. They turned out great, and were gone within fifteen minutes of the kids walking through the door, which makes it worth it... I guess. But it was still a total fail, and worthy to belong in this post. I'll never make my own dough for the damn things again. Won Ton wrappers work fine, and taste good. Screw authenticity. To make me feel better, I Google searched Pinterest Fails, and came up with some that are good for a laugh. Have a look! Needless to say, I felt a lot better after some of these pictures. What are some of your project disasters? Share your stories and pictures below!
As always, happy reading and super hugs! Shae Shannon
